During this reflection, Sheen Enthusiast (Al Smith) details ten good reasons for making a Holy Hour.
He shares some of the wisdom found in Archbishop Sheen’s book “Lord Teach us to Pray – An Anthology” (Sophia Institute Press – 2020)
But why spend an hour a day in meditation? Because we are living on the surface of our souls, knowing little either of God or our inner self. Our knowledge is mostly about things, not about destiny. Here are ten reasons to make a Holy Hour from Archbishop Sheen.
(1) Because it is time spent in the Presence of Our Lord Himself. If faith is alive, no further reason is needed.
(2) Because in our busy life it takes considerable time to shake off the “noonday devils,” the worldly cares, which cling to our souls, like dust.
(3) Because Our Lord asked for it.
(4) Because the Holy Hour keeps a balance between the spiritual and the practical.
(5) Because the Holy Hour will make us practice what we preach.
(6) Because the Holy Hour helps us make reparation both for the sins of the world and for our own.
(7) Because it reduces our liability to temptation and weakness.
(8) Because the Holy Hour is a personal prayer.
(9) Meditation keeps us from seeking an external escape from our worries and miseries.
(10) Finally, because the Holy Hour is necessary for the Church.

Ron Lengwin interviews Al Smith about the book he edited “Lord Teach us to Pray – A Fulton Sheen Anthology.Al Smith who is the Compiler and Editor of the book – “Lord Teach us to Pray – An Anthology” published by Sophia Institute Press takes time to share some of the insights Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen wrote on the topic of prayer.
Fr. Ron discusses with Al the contents of the book and a little bit of background information about the Venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen. Praying the Our Father, the Mass, the Holy Hour, the Stations of the Cross and much more will be the topics of discussion during their interview.
Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen wrote a great deal about prayer and the importance of developing the “Holy Habit of Prayer”. Over the years he produced a number of small prayer books that helped hundreds of thousands of souls. Many of these are included in this anthology.
The book is dedicated to St. Joseph in honour of his role in teaching Our Blessed Lord how to pray during his life. St. Joseph was also given the privilege of adoring the Lord, first at Bethlehem and then for many years at Nazareth. It is my hope that through his intercession, Good St. Joseph will help many souls learn how to pray and adore the Lord well. Speak Lord your servant is Listening.
